The Book
The Voting Booth was released on July 7, 2020.
Why did we pick this book?
We wanted to pick a book with a politically active MC for the month before the election. We love that the main character Marva is excited to vote and wants to fight against voter suppression. We’ll be discussing this at our virtual YA book club with Bards Alley on October 26th at 7pm EDT. Find more information here! We’d love to meet more YA readers. If you’re interested, email Leah at twirlywrites@gmail.com. She will send you the Zoom information.
What is this book about?
Marva has been ready to vote for a long time. She’s always wanted to make a difference in the world and this is the first step. Duke cannot wait for the election to be over. But when he goes to vote, he’s turned away. Marva sees this and is determined to make sure Duke’s voted gets counted. The two have a crazy day-long adventure to fight voter suppression.
What other YA books has this author written?
Brandy Colbert wrote Pointe and Little & Lion. Her short stories have been featured in Summer Days and Summer Nights: Twelve Love Stories and Black Enough: Stories of Being Young & Black in America.
I love that you’re reading books that coincide with current events!
