The Book
These Violent Delights was released November 17, 2020.
Why did we pick this book?
This book has been on our TBR for months so we thought we’d read it with our book club. Also, it has been a while since we’ve read a YA historical book. Add in that the book is set in Shanghai and we were sold. Email us at imallbookedupya@gmail.com to join us Sunday April 18th for book club!
What is this book about?
In Shanghai in 1926, the city is ruled by two rival gangs. The two rival gangs are in a blood feud, putting Juliette Cai in the middle. Juliette, a former flapper, is supposed to take her place as heir to the Scarlet Gang. The rival gang, the White Flowers, is run by Roma Montagov, Juliette’s first love. But something else is wrong in the city and when bodies start showing up, the two gangs must work together before they all lose.
What other YA books has the author written?
These Violent Delights is Gong’s debut novel.
This sounds really great! I love the setting and time period, they make for quite the combination!

Thanks! We’ve never read a historical YA set in China before.

I know they say never to ‘judge a book by its cover’ but that cover instantly had me intrigued and the description even more so. I will definitely be checking this out.

I’ve been meaning to read this one for so long too! I just love the premise of a romeo and juliet retelling set in the 1920s AND set in Shanghai like what’s not to love! Hope you enjoy!
