Review: 10 Truths and a Dare by Ashley Elston

Set five months after the events of 10 Blind Dates, 10 Truths and a Dare follows Olivia Perkins, Sophie Patrick’s cousin and best friend. It’s senior week and Olivia’s spent four years looking forward to all the parties. Then, she receives a call from her school that she did not complete her physical education requirement and if she doesn’t turn it in by the end of the week, she can’t graduate with her class.

Heartbroken and terrified she’ll lose her position as salutatorian, Olivia’s determined to track down the coach of her off campus golf credit to clear things up. Except, Olivia missed too much class and if she wants to graduate, she has to forgo senior week and spend every day at a golf tournament.

The only problem: Olivia’s parents are away and she doesn’t want them to know, because then her large Italian family will know as well. Since her mom set up a GPS tracker on her phone, Olivia enlists Sophie, Charlie and Wes to pretend to be her and attend every party for her. But, hiding something from a close and large family is never easy, especially when your Nonna knows all.

We had so much fun being back in this world. 10 Blind Dates was one of our favorite books of 2019. We were so excited to be back with the Messina family in time to watch the fab four (Sophie, Wes, Charlie and Olivia) graduate and head off to LSU together.

Like the first book, 10 Truths and a Dare had us laughing nonstop. Olivia’s mom’s constant texting was so funny, especially when Charlie and Wes pretended to be Olivia. The fab four’s antics are amazing, especially at the crazy parties they attend over the course of a week.

We can totally relate to Olivia being a perfectionist and not wanting to show any weakness. She just wants to do well and make her family proud. Plus, some of her cousins (The Evil Jos) would love to see her fall.

Now, let’s get to the romance. We shipped Wes and Sophie together from the beginning, so we couldn’t wait to see who Olivia would fall for. Enter Leo Perez, someone the fab four knew as a kid before he moved away and a friend of the Evil Jos. Talk about complicating things. Since we’re huge fans of forbidden romance, Leo won use over when he started spending more time with Olivia at the golf tournament. Their instant chemistry had us swooning.

However, we did wish that Elston chose a different sport besides golf. Sorry to any golf fans, but to us, it’s the most boring sport. We tend to prefer basketball, football and baseball. Still Leo won us over despite his dreams of playing college golf.

10 Truths and a Dare ended well. It felt realistic and also challenged Olivia. We hope Elston writes another book in this word so we can see the fab four go away to college together. How about a book on Charlie? He’s easily the funniest character.

If you’re looking for a YA contemporary romance about a hilarious large family, pick this one up on May 4, 2021.

  1. Great review! Very hyped about this book, though guess I have to wait a year until the paperback comes out. XD And I fully agree on the golf part, though I make an exception for mini golf, that is just so much fun.

  2. This sounds like such a fun series. I have been on the lookout for some new books to read and think I will need to get myself a copy of these.

  3. I love that this book, unlike so many stories these days, nails the ending! A good ending makes me look back on the story with appreciation, especially if it succeeds in the growth factor as well. Thanks for sharing a story to make me both laugh and think “this is time well spent!”.
