Synopsis
A lighthearted and swoony contemporary YA romance by fan-favorite author Kasie West about a girl who finds that a summer spent at a family resort isn’t as bad as she imagined…and that falling in love is filled with heartache, laughter, and surprises!
After being betrayed by her best friend, Avery is hoping for a picture-perfect summer. Too bad her parents have dragged her and her sister to a remote family camp for the entire summer. And that’s not even the worst part. Avery also has to deal with no internet, a cute but off-limits staff member, and an always-in-her-face sister.
But what starts as a disaster turns into a whirlwind summer romance as Avery embarks on an unexpected journey to figure out what she truly wants and who she wants to be.
Top 5 Reasons to Read Sunkissed
1. The Setting
Summer at a lake resort off the grid? It intrigued us right away. Plus, it has many fun activities.
2. The Romance
Brooks is a swoonworthy YA book boyfriend. He and Avery had amazing chemistry and banter.
3. The Friendships
Friendships aren’t always easy. Both Avery and Brooks have friend troubles. However, their true friends always had their backs.
4. The Music
We enjoy when books have a music theme. Brooks and Very bond over their shared love of music. Plus, add in a summer rock festival and we’re sold.
5. The Themes
The themes of finding yourself and letting go of other people’s expectations are prominent in Sunkissed. West did a great job of presenting realistic problems for the characters.
Book Review

Avery Young is used to always letting things go. She hates conflict and will avoid it at all costs. Then, her best friend kisses her boyfriend, who she just broke up with and Avery has had it. A summer away at a lake camp resort with no access to Wi-Fi or cell service came at the perfect time.
Too bad Lauren, Avery’s sister, can’t help but complain about being away for so long. She’s trying to become an influencer. The two sisters don’t always get along so when they are supposed to spend the summer together, Avery is desperate for some space.
Enter Brooks: the charming and off-limits staff member. He wants nothing more than to win a summer music festival prize and prove he’s a good enough guitar player to make it a career. Avery’s desperate to get out of her comfort zone, feeling trapped by always being the predictable good girl. The two come up with a deal: Brooks helps Avery branch out and she helps him write songs for the band.
But with their feelings becoming harder to ignore and more people catching on to them spending time together, can Brooks and Avery have a dream summer romance or will outside actors get in their way?
Sunkissed is one of our favorite Kasie West books yet! Seriously, with the adorable romance and focus on Avery getting the confidence to say she wants to be a musician, not a professor, we cheered her on from the beginning. We especially felt bad for her for how her parents and Lauren treated her at times. But Avery showed them how awesome she can be!
Then there’s Brooks, sweet, funny and charming, Brooks. West gave him a complex backstory and we love how dedicated he was to his music. Plus, he’s an amazing book boyfriend! The romance between Brooks and Avery was the perfect slowburn and felt realistic.
The minor characters had us laughing, especially Maricela. Avery and Maricela are fast friends and go on amazing adventures at the camp together. Plus, she was the supportive and cool friend Avery needed.
The ending had us so excited for Avery. She faced her fears and showed the doubters in her life what she truly wanted. Plus, the music festival setting was so fun to get in the mood for summer.
Overall, if you’re looking for a summer contemporary with a realistic MC, you’ll love reading about Avery’s adventure.
