April 2022 Book Club: I Must Betray You by Ruta Sepetys

Before we discuss our latest book club pick, we wanted to share with our readers that April 1st was out three-year blogging anniversary! Thank you to everyone who has read our blog. We adore sharing our love of YA books and our readers make it possible. I’m All Booked Up has become bigger than we ever imagined!

Readers, let us know in the comments if you have recommendations for posts or books. Also, if you ever want to collaborate or do a guest post for us, send us a message though the Contact Us page. Again, thank you all and we’re excited to see where the next year of book blogging takes us.

The Book

I Must Betray You released February 1, 2022.

Why did we pick this book?

I Must Betray You has been on our TBR ever since we found it on Goodreads a few months ago. We decided to go historical fiction for book club because it’s been so long since we’ve read one. We’re total history buffs and we’re also interested in East European politics. A book set in Romania in 1989 seemed perfect for us. Email us at imallbookedupya@gmail.com to join us Sunday April 17th for book club!

What is this book about?

It’s Communist Romania in 1989. Other Communist regimes are crumbling, but Nicolae Ceaușescu is still the tyrannical dictator of this East European country. Cristian Florescu just wants to be a writer, but that’s not possible when freedom doesn’t exist. Cristian is blackmailed by the secret police to become an informer and left with only two choices: betray everyone he loves or use his position to undermine this evil regime. We’re complete history nerds and can’t wait to read this historical YA book set in a tumultuous time in history.

What other YA books has the author written?

Sepetys wrote Between Shades of Gray, Salt to the Sea, Fountains of Silence and more. However, this our first time reading one of her books.
