Book vs TV Show: The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han

Before To All the Boy’s I’ve Loved Before, Jenny Han wrote The Summer I Turned Pretty, which released in 2009. When we found out that Amazon Prime was making one of our favorite series a TV Show, we couldn’t wait to watch it. We first read these books over a decade ago and quickly became invested in this summer story about Belly Conklin, who falls in love with two brothers named Conrad Fisher and Jeremiah Fisher.

Belly measures her life in summers, always counting down the days until June when she can go to Cousins Beach. But everything is different this summer. Belly’s turning 16, guys are noticing her and their families are hiding some major secrets. Overall, we really liked Amazon’s adaption. While we didn’t love every change, we’re impressed that the show still captured the character’s personalities and the book’s heart.

Warning: Spoilers if you haven’t read or watched The Summer I Turned Pretty.

Karen McManus is one of the biggest names in YA. Her debut book, One of Us is Lying, turned into an over-night bestseller. We were so excited when we heard that Peacock was turning it into a TV show. However, we’re always nervous that the TV show won’t stay true to the book. Below, check out the biggest differences between the book and the TV show.

Warning: Spoilers if you haven’t read or watched One of Us is Lying.

Book vs TV Show: Tiny Pretty Things

Amazon.com: Tiny Pretty Things (9780062342409): Charaipotra, Sona, Clayton, Dhonielle: Books

Warning: Spoilers if you haven’t read the book series or watched the TV show.

Late last year, Tiny Pretty Things released on Netflix. We had to watch it as soon as we saw the trailer. How could we resist a dark mystery set at a hyper-competitive ballet school?

The book by Sona Charaipotra and Dhonielle Clayton was published in May 2015. We read the book recently and couldn’t wait to compare it to the show.

While the show has not been renewed yet for a season 2, we hope it gets one. After all, the book has a sequel titled Shiny Broken Pieces. We’re excited to see what happens next in both the book and TV show.

Book vs TV Show: Pretty Little Liars

Amazon.com: Pretty Little Liars eBook: Shepard, Sara: Kindle Store

Warning: Spoilers if you haven’t read the book series or watched the TV show.

The year is 2010. The two of us sat on a bed with ABC Family turned on, eagerly waiting for the premiere of Pretty Little Liars. We’d seen the show previews for weeks and couldn’t wait to watch this teen thriller. At the time, we hadn’t read the books.

The first book came out in 2006 and the last one released 2014. There are 18 books total, 16 are part of the regular series and two are companions.

The TV show lasted for seven seasons, from 2010-2017. We loved the first few seasons, but as time went on, it got more and more ridiculous. Eventually, we had to read the source material to see the differences.
