Review: Chain of Thorns by Cassandra Clare

Finally, after almost two years of waiting, Chain of Thorns released on January 31, 2023. The last book in The Last Hours trilogy was our most anticipated book of 2023 and it did not disappoint.

Picking up right after the events of Chain of Iron, Chain of Thorns takes readers to a different part of England and to Paris, France.

Cordelia Carstairs is devastated about how her marriage with James Herondale is going. Needing a friend, Cordelia seeks comfort from Matthew Fairchild, leading the two to go on an adventure in Paris. Matthew hasn’t lost hope that Cordelia could love him back and he hopes that this vacation will lead to romance.

Mallory James has finally made a choice. Taking place immediately after the events of London Prep 6: The Country House, Mallory and Harry are still at a party right after Harry asked Mallory an important question.

Upset by his question, Mallory runs away in tears and starts to panic. It’s finally time for Mallory to set some boundaries with her heart. She knows that she wants to be with Noah, not Harry. But her fear of hurting Harry is getting in the way of her relationship.

For our July book club, we choose to read Love & Other Great Expectations by Becky Dean. We’ve had this book on our TBR for months and we’re excited to finally be able to go on an adventure across Britain through the eyes of an American teenager.

Paige Vickers is most likely to be forgotten. She’s in year 11 and nobody really knows who she is and she’s okay with that. At least if nobody knows who you are, then mean girls Grace Langdon and Amelia Murray can’t make your life miserable.

Paige’s home life isn’t great either. Her older brother Adam moved away to start university, leaving Paige alone with her emotionally abusive father and complicit mother. It’s best for Paige to stay out of everyone’s way because they all treat her like she doesn’t exist.
