Unpopular Book Opinions: Books We DNF’d

We’re excited for out second unpopular book opinions post. In 2021 we wrote Unpopular Opinions: YA Ships, where we discussed couples we didn’t like and couples we believe should have been endgame.

In this post, we’re discussing popular YA books that we DNF’d. Just to be clear, we don’t DNF very often, it usually happens no more than two to three times a year. Let us know your thoughts in the comments and if you DNF’s any of the books we did.

1. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is a super popular YA book with of over a million ratings on Goodreads. The premise originally sounded interesting to us because we liked the idea of the MC visiting a creepy island full of secrets. We just found the writing to be dull and we didn’t connect with any of the characters. Unfortunately, this book was over-hyped and we couldn’t get through it.

1. Snow Day – What’s your “comfort” book?

The Distance Between Us by Kasie West. As our readers know, we love Kasie West books. The Distance Between Us is one of our favorites for its sweet romance. Cayman Myers and Xander Spence have adorable banter, but more importantly, they genuinely grow to care about one another as they tackle some heavy issues. West books always have the perfect blend of romance, humor, and something series, which is why we will always go back to them.

Maybe This Time by Kasie West. The book had no real plot in our opinion. We usually love West’s writing, but we couldn’t support Sophie and Andrew’s budding romance. Not much happened in the span of a year, where Sophie and Andrew spend all holidays together. While the premise had potential, the book fell flat.

*We received this book in exchange for an honest review.*

Kane wakes up in the hospital unable to remember how he got there. He was found almost dead in a river and has no idea why. Now, he has to face police questioning and psychological evaluations.

He’s prepared for this when Dr. Posey comes into his hospital room. Only, Dr. Posey isn’t there to question or observe. He gives Kane a dream journal and tells him everything will be okay, in a cryptic manner.

December 2019 Book Club: The Guinevere Deception by Kiersten White

The Book

The Guinevere Deception by Kiersten White was released on November 5, 2019.

Why did we pick this book?

We enjoy a good fantasy from time to time, and the plot line drew us in. A re-imagination of the Arthurian legend? Um, yes please! Plus, we love a good forbidden romance trope so this is up our alley.  The book’s synopsis features the words “forbidden romance,” “deadly josts,” and “duplicitous knights.” What more could you ask for?
