A Comprehensive List of Banned YA Books

Happy Banned Book Week! Banned Book Week started in 1982 as a result of the increase in the number of books people were trying to get banned from schools and libraries. We’re celebrating the freedom to read by sharing all of the modern YA banned books we could find. We used information provided by libraries and the American Library Association’s Office of Intellectual Freedom to find banned and challenged books.

We encourage everyone to read banned books because if someone wants a book banned, there’s usually something important inside the cover for you to learn. Always question people who try to ban books and especially question their intent.

YA Authors: Who Have We Met?

We’ve been lucky! Between the two of us, we’ve met some of our favorite YA authors. We’ll add to this list as soon as we meet more. If you’re a YA author reading this, come visit the D.C. metro area!

1. Jennifer L. Armentrout

Claire met JLA at her YA/NA event, Apollycon, in 2018! Claire has been a fan of Armentrout’s since 2012, so she fangirled hardcore when she finally got to meet her. Who wouldn’t want to meet the mind behind Aiden St. Delphi. Armentrout is as fabulous as she seems on social media— so fun and charming. Her event was amazing and we’d definitely love to go again post-COVID. She even brought in the actor that plays Seth in her promos. Claire took a pic with him and JLA— ha!

Halloween Book Tag

This is Halloween, everybody scream! October is such a fun month. The leaves are changing (at least up north), Halloween decorations start, and people get ready to read and watch something spooky. Last year we came up with a list of 31 YA Books to Read Before Halloween. This year, we created a Halloween book tag.

Get ready for some mysteries, thrillers and horrors. After all, what’s Halloween season without a spooky book. What’s your favorite October read? Let us know in the comments! 

1. Favorite Scary Book

Don't Look Back by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Don’t Look Back by Jennifer L. Armentrout. Samantha wakes up from a horrible accident with amnesia. She has no idea how she came to be involved in the terrible accident that led to the death of her best friend, Cassie. Before the accident, Samantha had the perfect life: the hottest boyfriend, endless wealth, and a posse of friends. After she wakes up, Samantha tries to reinvent herself and grows closer to her brother’s best friend while the two try to piece together the night of Cassie’s death. This book had a very shocking ending full of many twist and turns. It kept us up at night after finishing just thinking about it. The mystery was engaging and left you dying (pun intended) to piece together the night of Cassie’s death. Definitely snag this one if you are looking for an excellent thriller with an equally stellar romance!

Holiday Gift Ideas: YA Books for Every Friend in Your Life

Books make great presents! No matter which holiday you celebrate, everyone could use a new book in their lives. 

1. The Murder Mystery Lover: One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus

McManus emerged in 2017 as the Queen of Mysteries. Plus, she’s super nice IRL! One of Us is Lying has a twist ending that will surprise the most well-read YA lovers. The companion novel to this book, One of Us is Next, will be released January 2020.

The Worst YA Book to Movie Adaptions

In this post we feature books we love that were unfortunately turned into crappy movies. The writers and producers of these movies fell short in understanding these amazing stories! YA authors, be careful who you sell your film rights to! Our problem with a majority of these picks is that we expect movies to at least follow major plot points. This seems to be too much to ask. 

1. City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

We’ve read every Cassandra Clare book, so to say we were disappointed when we saw this movie is an understatement. The casting was not on point (though, we did enjoy a few choices, like Simon and Izzy). The writers tried too hard to make the movie appealing to teen audiences, failing to explain important plot points in favor of playing up cheesy relationships. Our biggest issue was with the ending, which was absurd and entirely too dramatic (and we’re YA enthusiasts who love the flare for dramatics…but yikes!). We’ll give you a hint: white feathers falling from the sky.

You can’t have Halloween without witches. The witches from the Secret Circle series live in the eerie town of New Salem, Massachusetts. Cassie Blake moves to  own and suddenly she’s thrown into a world of magic and danger. She always believed she was a normal teenager, until she meets the circle, a group of 11 other witches who need Cassie to complete their group.
